Continued PPTA strike action

We have been advised that PPTA members nationally have voted to take strike action across the coming weeks.

Kia ora koutou,

Nayland College has been advised that PPTA Te Wehengarua members, covered by the Secondary Teachers’ Collective Agreement (STCA), have overwhelmingly voted to take strike action over the coming weeks. The union is only required to give three days’ notice of strike action. However, please plan for the strike action outlined below to proceed unless you hear otherwise from us.

The Nayland College Board advises that industrial action will affect students as follows:

Partial Strikes – 14-17 October

Between Tuesday 14 October and Friday 17 October (this week), there will be a series of partial strikes from 9:00am to 3:15pm each day. During these times, PPTA members will not teach, instruct, or supervise students in certain year levels. All other students will continue to be taught as usual.

Students will be rostered home on the following days:

  • Tuesday 14 October – Year 9

  • Wednesday 15 October – Year 10

  • Thursday 16 October – Years 11 and 12

  • Friday 17 October – Year 13

Full Strike – Thursday 23 October

Due to the large number of staff involved, no regular classes will run at Nayland College on this day. If making alternative arrangements for junior students is difficult, we can provide supervised study in the Library. Supervision will be provided by non-PPTA teaching staff, and students must bring their own online study materials. More details will be shared closer to the time.

Further action

Additional industrial action is planned from Wednesday 29 October. We will communicate details closer to the time.

Camps and trips

Pre-scheduled camps and trips are unlikely to be impacted by the strikes. Individual staff members will be in touch directly with parents around specific events. In addition, there may be some changes to calendared school activities to accommodate the strike action. Please keep a close eye on all emails, newsletters and daily notices.

Final notes

Please note that our experience is that things can change quickly during contract negotiations. Should we be informed of any changes to the industrial action planned, we will let our community know as soon as possible.

We understand the timing is challenging, especially for senior students preparing for external exams. However, this action is beyond the control of the school. We encourage all students to use this time productively to revise and complete assignments.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Ngā mihi
