YEAR 13 DRESS CODE

Our Year 13 students are allowed to wear mufti within our dress code requirements. Wearing appropriate dress is a learning opportunity for students. Managing self is a key competency that is highly valued by employers and tertiary institutions. When students leave the school environment they will find themselves having to make decisions about what is appropriate dress.

SCHOOL UNIFORM FOR BOTH SENIORS AND JUNIORS

On 26 August 2026, our Board of Trustees met, with school uniform being one of the items discussed. We take great pride in the fact that every student who attends Nayland College is part of our whānau, and part of belonging to that whānau is wearing our uniform correctly and with pride.   We are placing an increased focus on students wearing the correct school uniform. We would really appreciate the support of parents and whānau in reinforcing these expectations at home.

As a reminder, students may wear a plain black jacket as an outer layer. This includes puffer jackets, windbreakers and other waterproof-style jackets with no, or only very subtle, branding. Non-school hoodies, zip-up hoodies, polar fleece jackets and similar garments are not part of the approved uniform. Jackets should also be removed when students are in class.

We are also aware that there have been some issues with the current girls’ trouser option, and this has resulted in some students wearing alternative black trousers. Where alternative trousers are worn, they need to be plain black polyester or cotton trousers. They should not be denim, cargo pants, track or sweat pants, activewear, have cuffed ankles, visible logos, distressing or fading.

The Board has also considered options for broadening the range of approved uniform outerwear. The College already has a black Nayland Sport hoodie available through NZ Uniforms, and we are looking at extending this style so that it can be worn more widely as an approved uniform item. This could include versions featuring areas such as Arts, Kapa Haka and Dance, alongside a general “Nayland College” option. We hope this will provide students with a practical and comfortable outer layer while maintaining a consistent school identity.

As always, if your family is experiencing any difficulty or hardship relating to school uniform, please contact your child’s Dean. We would much rather work alongside families to find a solution than have uniform become a barrier for a student.
