A huge congratulations to our mixed choir ‘NayCol Chorale’ who won silver at the recent Big Sing Southern Cadenza Finale in Timaru! Head of Music Kay Mackenzie tells the story.

Singing success has been a recent highlight, with our Naycol chorale coming away with a Korimako award at the recent Big Sing Southland Cadenza held in Timaru. ‘Korimako’ is the New Zealand Bellbird and in this context, the title equates to the Big Sing’s equivalent of a Silver award.

NayCol Chorale certainly ‘packed a punch’ with their programme. They opened with the rousing ‘Ad Astra’ followed by a reflective setting of ‘Where Dwells the Soul of My Love’ featuring an added touch of class with instrumentalist Jessica MacBrayne on Oboe. Their finale was a selection from the ever-popular musical West Side Story featuring their very own ‘Maria’ and ‘Tony’ in the beautiful solo spotlights of Year 10 talents’, Simone Tabili and Isaiah Vahatau-Laing.

Big thanks once again go to their accompanist Pauline Boyd who is currently celebrating her 38th year of a gratifying career in accompanying. Pauline has indicated that she will retire from her work with the choir but won’t be a stranger to the students as she will continue working with accompanying our soloists for future exams. Thanks also goes to Mr Weeks for his relentless passion towards propelling the choir towards Excellence in their performances.

The future holds lots of potential for new members to join as NayCol Chorale and Sotto Voce (Girl’s Choir) are about to join forces in a new project….SHOW CHOIR! This means that NOW is a good time for new members to come along and kindle their love of singing. All are Welcome on a Tuesday Lunchtime in MU1 or a Thursday morning in the Hall at 8:40am to come along and have a go at singing a selection of broadway showstopping hits.
