Year 12 student Mia Faulkner is already thoroughly enjoying being the voice for Nayland College students on the board of trustees.
Mia’s role as student representative is to voice students’ opinions to the board, as well as opinions of her own. She finds the monthly meetings interesting and likes hearing other people’s points of views on different situations.
“I like being able to give my own opinion, I quite enjoy that about it and learning how the school is actually run.” She says that even though she is the youngest person there, everyone is very respectful and they value her opinion.
Mia highly recommends the role to others who don’t mind giving up a few hours of their free time every month and who are interested in finding out how the school is governed. A bonus of the meetings is the food on offer. “There’s always free food at the meetings. Always sushi and chocolate. It’s so good, the only reason I go!” she joked.
Between meetings, Mia balances the many commitments and opportunities she has taken on this year. As well as playing the role of Anne Frank in the 2018 senior production The Diary of Anne Frank, she makes time for youth group, rehearsals for the two choirs she’s in, co-leading Aquila House, and taking part in the Big Brother Big Sister programme.
In the little free time she has, you may find her driving her car Mildred or having some downtime with her dog Dolly. Mia also loves activities such as kayaking, tramping and travelling. This month she is visiting Tonga on a family holiday. “I just quite like the outdoors. It’s where I spend most of my time.”
