14 Sep Winter Tournament Results
Nayland College had six teams competing in different tournaments over the course of Winter Tournament week. The tournaments ranged from Nelson all the way down to Invercargill.
The Senior A Netball team competed in the SISS Senior Netball Tournament in Dunedin. The team had a great tournament making the B grade final. The team lost the final in the end by seven goals. However, it was a tightly contested one goal match with up to five minutes to go in the game.
The team had two stand out games. The first one being in the cross over pool play where they beat a fierce Cromwell team by three goals. This game was a huge turning point for the team. The Netballers went on to make the semi finals, winning this hard fought game by two goals. It was a very exciting game and the winner was not decided until 30 seconds on the clock. The semi final win secured the team a position in the A grade competition in 2019 where the Netball team will competed against the best netball teams in the South Island. Special congratulations to Maddie Marshall and Darlene Rangiuia who made the tournament team.
The Senior Girls and Boys Basketball teams travelled all the way to Invercargill to compete in the SISS Senior Basketball Tournament. Both teams had some very tough and close games, narrowly missing out on games anywhere from one to eight points. Which in a Basketball game is nothing! The boys ended up finishing 20th and the girls 12th.
This was the first time the school had sent a girls team away to this tournament in a few years. This meant the team went into the competition being the lowest seeded team. The 12th finish was a great achievement which will help the team leading into next year with their seeding and first round of games. Next year will be an exciting year for this young team as they will not be losing any players.
The Junior Boys Basketball team competed in the SISS Junior Basketball Tournament in the Division Two section. The team had a very successful week making it all the way to the finals. They played a slick Riccarton High School team in the final and unfortunately fell short of the win. The great results will see the team move back into division one for 2019. Like the girls, the boys team is also young and only expecting to lose three players in 2019. The tournament would have helped both teams gain the knowledge and experience they will need leading into next year.
The 1st XI Boys Football team played in the NZSS Jim Wishart Cup here in Nelson. The very young and new team had some close games. Coach Hamish Lewis said,
“The team had the ball down the scoring end enough however we were just unable to put the ball into the net”.
He also went on to say that,
“…(Captain) Aayush Kumar had an outstanding tournament and lead the team well”.
The team will only lose two players heading into the 2019 season so will be looking to build on from this years experience.
The 1st XI Hockey Boys competed in the NZSS Coaches Cup Tournament. This year was the first time Nayland has sent a boys hockey team away to a tournament in over eight years. The team was seeded the lowest in the tournament which meant they came across their toughest game of the tournament first up. They played Tawa College who they had played earlier in the year and lost convincingly to. However, playing them in tournament was a different story. The team lost to Tawa 3-1 in a tightly contested match. The team went on to win a game and draw a game placing them second in their pool and moving them into the quarter final playoffs. The boys ended up finishing 6th at the tournament and doubling their original seeding.
A massive congratulations to all the students who competed in tournament week and a special thanks to all the coaches, managers and umpires who were involved. It is a big week and without the help of these people the tournaments would not happen.
