29 Apr Nayland skater represents NZ at Oceania Championships

Nayland College’s Mitsuko Nam produced a strong performance at the Oceania Artistic Skating Championships earlier this month. The Year 11 student gained placings in the Figure and Solo Dance events, as part of the New Zealand team competing at the Championships in Brisbane.

Skating has been much more than a hobby for Mitsuko, since she was f? irst introduced to roller-skates by her parents in 2005. Artistic skating is “completely different from any other sport (even gymnastics or ice-skating) so it means starting from step 1,” she explains. She now? trains 4-5 times a week with Nelson Roller Sports at the Tahunanui skating rink.

Although Mitsuko felt that the pressure of competing internationally impacted on her performance at the Championships, she was happy with her results. Her next goal is to qualify for the NZ team again in 2016, when the Oceania Championships will be held in NZ.
