29 Sep Nayland Outside the Classroom: Trades Academy at NMIT
This year 40 Nayland College students from Years 12 and 13 are enrolled in the Top of the South Trades Academy programme, hosted by the Nelson-Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT). These students spend one day each week studying a trades course, on-site at NMIT, while completing their NCEA studies at Nayland College for the remainder of the week.
The programme offers a huge variety of opportunities in a hands-on learning environment. Morin, a student in the carpentry stream, values the workshop aspect of the course the most. “It’s really practical. I’m making useful things, gifts for my family,” she explains. She also appreciates the tertiary environment. “The tutors are great. They treat you like an adult.”
Morin will continue her studies with a pre-apprenticeship carpentry course at NMIT in 2016. She recommends the course to senior students who are looking for something different.
