05 Mar Nayland College collaborates with Swim New Zealand to coach primary swimmers

For the last three years, Nayland College Year 13 students have been involved in a learn to swim programme with Nayland Primary and Swim New Zealand.

Head of Physical Education and Health, Athol Webster, says he has found this swim programme to be one of the most successful and rewarding he has undertaken in his years of teaching. “Not only for our students, but also for the primary schools, who can have swimming taught at a 1:2 ratio with instructors in the pool with their students, a situation impossible in most other scenarios.” This also ties in well with an NCEA Achievement Standard ,which the whole class can do, aimed at improving the health of a target group (in this case small children and water safety).

28 Year 13 students are involved in 2015, and they have the opportunity to gain 20 credits towards Level 3 NCEA plus a swim teaching award on successful completion of the course. Many have also gained work in local Nelson swim teaching programmes.
