21 Mar High-flying former teammates reunite

Former Nayland student Jordan Lindbom and 2017 student leader Sam Seelen share a passion for basketball.

Their considerable talents led them to play alongside each other on the Nayland Senior A team last year. Though they didn’t share court time, the duo had a chance to catch up again during the Canterbury Rams vs Nelson Giants NZNBL game in Marlborough last weekend.

Jordan is learning a lot from playing for the Canterbury Rams under the guidance of coach Mark Dickel. “It’s real good being surrounded by all these really talented players, these older guys,” he said.

He sees his career in Christchurch as being a stepping stone to a possible move to the States. The former forward who now plays guard has been offered a place by Barstow Community College in southern California. There’s also the possibility of an offer from a college in Nebraska in the wings.

Sam would also jump at the chance of pursuing his passion for basketball as a career. He has been training with the Nelson Giants since before Christmas after he was offered one of two youth development spots with the team.

Sam is inspired by seeing former Nayland teammates such as US based Angus Riley – his coach when he was at Broadgreen Intermediate – and Jordan move into careers in the sport . “Seeing Jordan getting a pathway shows there are opportunities out there,” he said.
