19 May Finn takes the fight to New Caledonia for Oceania Judo Champs
New Caledonia wasn’t a holiday for Nayland College’s Finn Sweetman. The Year 13 student spent the autumn term break at the Oceania Judo Championships, coming away with silver medals in the Junior Men’s -73kg division and the teams event.
Finn’s trip through the championship pool was a smooth one, and although he missed out on gold, his performance placed him near the top of a pool of competitive Australasian judoka.? He also bested? an -81kg opponent in the teams event to earn NZ second place.
These results aren’t to be confused with overnight success. Finn typically trains between five and seven days a week, and competes regionally and nationally every year. 2015 was his third selection for the Oceania Championships, and he hopes to compete at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games in future.
