30 Jun Regional awards and all that jazz

Nayland College jazz enthusiasts Sam White and Harry Stocker impressed at the regional Youth Jazz Competition held at the Honest Lawyer on Sunday 25th June.

Sam White received the award for Best Bassist. The talented bass player, who has played the instrument since starting at Nayland College in 2013, was pleasantly surprised by the accolade. “It felt good,” he said. “I was real surprised. There were some other good bassists.”

Fellow student Harry Stocker also received recognition in the form of a Highly Commended for his guitar playing. As well as playing for funk-pop band So Far with Sam, Harry plays in the Nelson Youth Jazz Collective. He described the award as a “great honour” and is intending to “keep plying (his) trade.”

Both students are waiting to hear if their band So Far has made it through to the Nationals in the Rockquest Competition. For Sam, it could be the turning point. “If we get in, I’ll probably take it more seriously. For now, it’s just fun.”
