07 Jul On the road to success with a smile
Year 12 student Alina Mothes from Germany returns home as she arrived -with a broad smile on her face, having relished her time at Nayland College.
Alina joined the Nelson Adventure Swimming Club, the Nayland College Trail Running Cub and entered numerous local sporting events during her time here. Alina’s approach has seen her make the most of her opportunities.“You should try whatever you want to try, and you should not be afraid of it. Just do it. Then you can decide what you want to do,” she said.
Alina ran her first half marathon earlier in the year, before deciding to enter and run her first full marathon: the recent Monaco Mid Winter Marathon. Alina’s only aim was “to finish with a smile. And I did.” She modestly omits that she also finished the 42.2 km race in a time of 3hr 38 minutes and was the third placed woman home, only seconds behind second place finisher and within sight of the winner.
Alina’s not sitting on her success though and has already set her sights on a new goal, a mountain marathon in the alps of Europe with her sister later in the year. We thank Alina and all the January intake of international students for their varied and valuable contributions to school and community life and look forward to keeping in touch and hearing of their future adventures.
Kia ora mai! ( Go well!)
