07 Dec Education through the outdoors with the Learning Centre

I have had the privilege of teaching the students in the Learning Centre Outdoor Education this year.

I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching about and through our local places. We have learnt about and explored Ngawhatu Valley by mountain bike, learnt the history and stories of our significant places and landmarks, rode and walked the Great Taste Trail from school to Moturoa/Rabbit island, orienteered at Rabbit Island, climbed to the Centre of New Zealand and Puke Tirohia Marama, and walked through Spooners Tunnel twice.

The highlights for me included Jack making it to the summit of the Centre of New Zealand, the Outdoor First Aid Training and scenarios, the water safety session at the Richmond Aquatic Centre, witnessing students learning and improving their fitness, and the visits to Nature Land.

I would like to wish the class all the best for their holidays and I hope they all re-visit lots of the outdoor places with their families.
